Prof. Eero Tarasti: Introduction to the semiotic analysis of music
Lecture course (14 hours) for Musicology, the fourth teaching period, spring 2019 at the University of Helsinki, Topelia, Unioninkatu 38, hall C120, on Mondays starting March 25, April 1st, 8,15, and May 6, at 4-7 p.m. Code: TTM-MU331
Lectures deal with the following issues:
- History and classics of semiotics from Saussure, Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes to Umberto Eco.
- Main schools of semiotics (Peirce, Greimas i.e. Paris School, Lotman)
- Existential semiotics (Tarasti)
- History and main representatives of musical semiotics (from Jean-Jacques Nattiez, Gino Stefani and Vladimir Karbusicky to Raymond Monelle, Marta Grabocz, Robert S. Hatten); backgrounds of semiotic thought in musicology: Heinrich Schenker, Ernst Kurth, Boris Asafiev, L.B. Meyer
- Analyses of representative musical works by W.A. Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Chopin, Richard Wagner, French composers, Tchaikovsky, Gustav Mahler, Sibelius
- Music as a performing art

Eero Tarasti: Myth and Music 1979, A Theory of Musical Semiotics 1994, Signs of Music 2003, Semiotics of Classical music 2012, Sein und Schein 2013 (most of these books also available in French, Italian and Chinese)
